It's like he thought of it for a moment! Like ..
"Guys, I don't even know you.. .. fuck it. Let's do it!"

I love that he doesn't even look at their hands stacked. He just looks back and forth between their faces and goes, "fuck it, let's go" with the little ear flare.

Doggo pauses to consider: It's now or never. If I put my paw down, it's a binding contract. Do I want to stay with these humans or not. I'M IN!!

What back story
155
u/towerfella 4h ago
When he was a pup, back on the farm, some ruffians came by and packed him off. First to the circus, where he was forced to stand on a ball for hours on end and beg for stale and moldy treats, most of which was yoinked mid-air by Sally the Singing Seal, of which he often shared the stage with. Then it was off to the docks for a few months, where he learned what a sap was.
He was picked up by animal control fourteen times by the age of three, mostly for prostitution charges. Thats how he met Frank and Samantha. They came by to toss a meowing bag into the bay and took pity on the mutt after seeing him slink out from behind the forecastle of a mini-replica schooner by the welcome center entrance.
They’ve been inseparable ever since.

u/VagrantStation 4h ago
It’s a tale as old as time. We’ve all been there.

u/MrSoapbox 3h ago
Sadly yes, and I think we've all met Sally the "singing" seal too, I'm not a fan to be honest, I'll keep my thoughts to myself but I think we all have a similar experience with her. Still struggling with the rash today

That dog is almost certainly deaf. So a higher than normal chance it was dumped somewhere or was going to be killed.

u/NeatNefariousness1 3h ago
I wondered if he was deaf and it makes me even more glad that he was rescued if he is.

This made me cry. Years ago, we lost our 3 elderly dogs all within the span of 18 months- the last two being 4 months apart. I was devastated. We spent weeks searching local rescues and had narrowed it down to 3 from different rescues. The first one we were meeting was my least favorite on paper. He had been an "outside only" dog, had been neglected, abused, and even mutilated. He also had a very strong prey drive, wasn't housebroken, and had severe trust and reactivity issues. He had been at the rescue for two years. He had been adopted and returned a few times bc people just couldn't handle him.
I remember reminding my family over & over that we were not going to fall in love with the first dog we met. But he & I just connected instantly. I was still a little hesitant but he knew before I did, that I was his Mama. At one point, he literally hugged me. The rescue ladies started crying. He had never shown that kind of affection to anyone before. I remember thinking to myself F---! I guess I just got a dog
He was my soul dog. The dog love of my life. We had this bond and connection that transcends words and reasoning. We could read each other's thoughts and feel each other's feelings. We had him almost 6 years but he passed away suddenly & unexpectedly last summer. There hasn't been a second that has passed that I don't think of him & miss him.
She didn't just adopt a dog. She found a soul mate.

u/Poiboy1313 3h ago
This is a great story. Excuse me, I think that there's a ninja carrying onions around here and I gotta go find 'em. Brb.

u/trunkssosp 2h ago
I was walking through a rescue, no intention of adopting just killing some time. My baby girl looked into my soul from the back of the kennel and I knew I couldn't lever her there. Feel to my knees and just said oh no, Shes coming home with us. I love my Alabama street dog. Not sure how she feels about the winters in the north but she lives on our heated mattress pad with us.
Sometimes they find you.

No drama. Careful consideration and contemplation of his choices based on years of experience.
Smart doggo.

"'OK. OK. They're touching hands. That's a thing. Nobody commanded anything. I would have heard a command. I know sit. I know stay. I know the sound of the treat bag from two rooms away. This is none of those things. They're still looking. Both of them. Same time. That never means nothing.
This is escalating...
I should just leave. I could leave. The hallway is right there. But that also feels wrong somehow. If I leave now that's also a thing they'll react to and I can't handle two unknowns at once.
...still looking.
I don't know what this is but I feel like I'm either in trouble or about to get a treat and the gap between those two things is terrifying. Where are my testicles, Summer?!
OK I'm going to put my paw in. I don't know why. It felt like the right shape of a thing to do. Like the put it in the square hole thing. I am the square hole guy. I've always been the square hole guy.
Initiating default response protocol.'
