I was racking my brain, trying to remember if I'd taken my morning anti-biotic, when an idea occurred to me

That’s a pretty decent idea. I’ve forgotten to take my pills even with a pill organizer.

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago

I've got a pill box for my dailies, but since I have to take these twice a day, I was afraid I'd forget the evening one.

But yeah — I also sometimes forget my pill box completely and wind up missing a day. Which isn't the end of the world with the meds I take, but it would suck to skip a full day of antibiotics.

u/lmaydev 6h ago

Get a am/pm one

40

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago

Haha my pill box actually is an am/pm one, but I just use it as a two-week one since—other than these antibiotics—I don't have any evening pills.

30

u/mnid92 5h ago

I put mine on the coffee pot so I remember to take them in the morning, and then I put the container on my pillow so I remember to take them at night.

It's silly but it actually works better than leaving them in the cupboard where I never look at the container and I'm more prone to forgetting.

It also doesn't help that I have the object permeance and memory retention of a toddler.

u/Dull-Importance-841 4h ago

Honestly that’s actually a smart system 😭 if it works, it works. Putting it where you can’t ignore it is way better than hiding it in a cupboard and forgetting it.

Well... Dont do that and use the pm side just for these pills. Problem solved.

What? Why the hell would they do something like that? You're insane for trying to use logic

This is much better than me counting them to figure out if I took the first or second dose.

u/petervaz 5h ago

You could also set alarms on your phone

7

u/VagabondVivant 5h ago

I generally do, but my issue (and the problem this hack solves) is more about me forgetting if I took my pill at the allotted time.

If you'll notice, the first four slots don't have writing. That's what started this all — I was staring at them, trying to remember if one of those used pill slots was for this morning, and I ultimately had to count out from the very first pill I took (Wed night) to see if I'd taken today's morning pill.

By marking the pills with their time slots, I'll be able to tell at a glance whether or not I'd already taken my allotted pill.

2

u/Aleashed 1h ago

Text someone every time you take your meds. If you took it or not, can be found by looking at texts.

Plus now someone else knows you missed it.

u/PrisonerV 4h ago

I set alarms on my phone -and- use a morning/evening pill container. Getting old kinda sucks but the pills keep you alive and the ticker from failing.

3

u/GarmenCZE 5h ago

I got an app called my therapy, it keeps track of when you need to take the pill, but also of your stock of the. Its free and I just left my life in the hands of this app and I am still alive. Basically you set how much of what pill you need when. Then it bugs you every 5 minutes to take it like an alarm clock and you need to click confirm, don't even need to unlock the phone.

2

u/Dull-Importance-841 4h ago

That actually sounds like a solid system tbh 😭 if it’s annoying you every 5 minutes and forces a confirmation, it basically removes the “I forgot” excuse completely.

Honestly half of staying consistent with meds is just building an environment that nags you more than your brain can ignore.

2

u/bkgn 5h ago

I take a biologic, which must be taken the same time every day.

I got a cheap cellphone lockbox. It has a timer. It makes a loud noise when it opens itself. If it's open, I know I haven't taken the pill yet. I close and lock it right after I take a pill out, it's impossible to forget since I'm holding it.

If you need to take something twice a day, just set the timer to 12 hours.

u/legitimate_rapper 6h ago

This won’t help you remember to take them, but will highlight if you MISSED one.

21

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago

Yeah. And in my case, prevent me from accidentally double-dosing because I forgot I'd already taken my allotted one.

But remembering to take them in the first place — that's another hurdle for me to clear.

→ More replies (7)

4

u/VelvetMerryweather 6h ago

Haha, that's a good point. It will at least prevent you from taking a second one after forgetting you already took one though.

I feel like it could also a bit more of a visual reminder whenever you see it to have assigned days on them. Like each one is given more importance, instead of just seeing a blank foil.

u/nimbusfool 3h ago

I have an app to remind me plus phone reminders and I still question myself some days. Especially after a long work day and the deja vu of standing in one place every morning and evening and taking the same pill. Did I take it or have I done this action so many times I just think I did? I have found for extra backup that in the morning after taking my meds I put the bottle one shelf up. When I take it in the evening I put it back on the bottom shelf. Extra super backup.

u/Dr_Fortnite 4h ago

Ive got one that comes apart so my pills are part of my every day carry and I notice if theyre gone

2

u/No_Tangerine2720 3h ago

I only take one pill but I sometimes forget if I take it or not so I started counting out 7 pills for the week on Sunday in the bottle and I know how many I've taken

2

u/smibeanie 3h ago

Waking up with the tray for today already empty, like did i make a mistake preparing? Did i in a slumber state of mind already take it earlier? Did i just forget? Should i just wing it and take another one? There really is little organizing if your mind is foggy, so this is actually a really neat trick. I take high dosages of antidepressants and not taking it could easily cause serotonine syndrome. I've been there before and it's not fun.

62

My favorite lifehacks are the simplest ones.

Here's another pill-related one, from a while ago. It's come in super handy, especially when trying to rifle through the pill bottles at night when I've left my glasses in the room.

6

u/CouchGremlin14 5h ago

They also sell pill bottle lids with timers on them that reset whenever you open them. Wouldn’t work for these since it’s a blister pack, but it’s really nice for things you have to take every X hours. I also got tired of the “but did I actually take my pill??” game.

Just to pile on this - whenever my kids needed liquid antibiotics, I would put a piece of blue/green painters tape on the side with a grid that included the total number of days with doses, so that I would check off each dose given with a sharpie

2

u/Crime_Dawg 5h ago

I mean, they do make am / pm pill boxes.

2

u/Equivalent-Toe-6036 4h ago

Very true but sometimes that 1 extra step of getting an am/pm pill box is enough to stop the solution

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago

This might be old hat to some, but I'd never seen it anywhere so I figured I'd share it after it came to me this morning.

I suck at remembering what I did when, and didn't really wanna have to set up yet another alarm (especially a twice-daily one), so I just grabbed a sharpie and scribbled notes on the back of the blister pack so I'd always know if I'd taken my pill at the correct time.

16

u/braiding_water 6h ago

I’m supposed to take pills before I eat & I always forget. I’ve put notes around the kitchen in fridge. It make work for a couple of days but then I don’t “see” the reminders anymore.

5

u/R_V_Z 4h ago

This is why some jobs require checklists instead of relying on signage. Signs become background noise once you are used to them.

u/dontreadragebait 5h ago

I saw my cousin write the time and date along with her initials when applying our Papa's fentanyl patch when doing his Hospice.

It was a huge light bulb moment for me! I'm T1 diabetic and use an insulin pump. You have to apply a new insertion site every 3 days to avoid abcesses and infections, and it was something I struggled with, as it just never settled into my memory. Reminders were often ignored, because I'd be out and about, or busy, and lie to myself that I'll remember to do it "later."

I realized that I could write the date right on the insertion set, and just check it every day when it would be convenient to go replace it immediately if it had been 3 days!

My skin has had way less problems with infection, or malabsorption since I started doing it!

And I also write on blister packs!

The hardest activity to remember is one you do often, and have been doing a long time. Your memory blurs precise details because the memory runs together so it becomes unimportant!

Just a tip but daily reminders on my phone help a lot. And to not delete or mark it as ‘complete’ until after I have actually taken the pill.

10

u/Some_Evidence1814 5h ago

I do the same

6

u/fiftyseven 4h ago

i'd just forget to mark it off. and then be unable to remember if it's the marking or the pilltaking i forgot to do

u/bumbes 3h ago

Glad op didn’t mark his viagra-pills like that

7

u/rapratt101 6h ago

Oh duh. Man that’s a good solution. I always write it on a notepad on the fridge and cross off each day. This is better.

Actual life hack. Thanks!

7

u/SnoopsMom 4h ago

Birth control meds are marked with days of the week on their packaging. Helps me because I take all my pills at the same time every day so I can just check my BC pills and if that is gone, I know I took everything.

7

u/Red__M_M 5h ago

If you have a bottle, then you can flip it to signify that you have taken the pill.

In the morning everything is rising. Your bottle should be right side up. If it’s not then you haven’t taken the pill. Take it and correct the bottle.

In the evening everything is winding down. Your bottle should be upside down. If it isn’t then take a pill and flip the bottle.

6

u/Fire_Lake 5h ago

this is fun because in the evening if the bottle is right side up, you get to wonder if you forgot your pill or you forgot to flip it

This is brilliant. And I'm also mad I never thought of something so simple. LOL!

16

u/throwawaycanadian2 6h ago

FYI, a lot of pharmacies sell a plastic version of this.

5

u/ThickDoughnut4267 6h ago

True. Probably not worth buying that if you don't have a chronic illness, though. If you have to take several drugs at different times of the day however, I believe those things you mentioned can be a lifesaver

5

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago

Yeah, these antibiotics are just for the next couple of weeks as I recover from dental surgery.

Meanwhile I do have a standard pillbox for my regular daily pills, but none of them are twice-daily, so I'd still be likely to forget my evening med.

u/JalapenoPopPoop 4h ago

This is actually such a simple yet effective idea. I now need to get a waterproof marker 😊

3

u/twosidesofeachperson 6h ago

This is genius. I can believe I didn’t think of this before

3

u/sogwatchman 4h ago

Been doing that with my dog's meds for years. It does help to keep track.

3

u/ashonee75 2h ago

As a pharmacist, I approve of this post.

3

u/MariaMianRute 1h ago

Genius. Going to copy you idea. 💡

2

u/Kahnza 6h ago

I like this! I do sorta the inverse of this. I like to write the dates on things that take a long time to use. Like big packs of toilet paper or paper towels. Or other things like a big container of coffee, oats, rice, and many other shelf stable but not permanent foods. I also like putting dates on my deodorant, garbage bags, cotton swabs, and other items that take awhile to use. It can be interesting to see how long some things last.

2

u/SombraOnline 6h ago

Oh that’s smart! Better than taking a selfie before taking a pill lol.

2

u/o0meow0o 6h ago

I can’t believe I’ve never thought of this. Thanks for sharing.

2

u/ServerCreature 4h ago

My birth control has 4 rows, seven column and you get 7 thin stickers of the weekdays all starting on different days to put over the columns. I think that design is genius, and also similar to this

2

u/goddamwarrior 3h ago

Thank you! That’s clever!

2

u/scattywampus 3h ago

Nice one!!

2

u/Loud-Mans-Lover 3h ago

This rocks if you've got foil backed ones!

I usually flip my bottles - not taken is upright, taken is upside down.

For everything else I have a notepad that I write all at once in the morning, then just check it off as I go.

2

u/lemonhead2345 3h ago

I do this on pill bottles. Draw a line with hash marks to mark off AM/PM then mark an X after taking the dose. Helps so much.

2

u/Motor-Illustrator226 3h ago

Absolutely great hack! In fact, some meds like birth control pills are designed like this -- the back of each pack has Monday through Sunday labeled, in 4 rows of 7. As long as you know what day it is, you always know if you've taken that day's pill.

2

u/PwanaZana 3h ago

that's a good idea, yea

2

u/SaltySall 2h ago

That is actually pretty smart

2

u/spiritualpudge 2h ago

most things can be solved by a good list, i swear

2

u/duly_notes 2h ago

It's usually the simplest, most straight forward solution that makes sense. Ideas like this basically costs nothing but are the hacks that lasts a lifetime. Thanks for sharing.

2

u/YSKIANAD 1h ago

I use an AM/PM pill box and have two "Take Pills" alarms on my phone: 9 AM and 9 PM.

2

u/tragiccosmicaccident 1h ago

Used to live in Taiwan, they gave you all your pills in little labeled wax paper bags, individual doses by time, it was great

2

u/Extension-Eye-8571 18m ago

Why has this never been obvious to me before 🤦🏼‍♀️🩷

2

u/warfrogs 16m ago

This is similar to how blister pack meds are tracked in group homes and care facilities allll over. Generally, instead of labeling before dispensing, you label as you dispense to document and track who administered the medications and exactly when.

2

u/Zanahorio1 6h ago

That’s wicked smaht, kid. 👍

1

u/bakesesh 6h ago

I usually set alarms on my phone and repeat for the duration

1

u/amyc7 6h ago

Thanks for the tip!!

1

u/tquilas 6h ago edited 6h ago

I have an app for that. Helps me a lot. :-)

2

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago

1

u/2lostbraincells 6h ago

I am really bad with any meds, especially antibiotics. I use an app called "Take your pills".

1

u/Avtomati1k 6h ago

every night i put mine on the upper nightstand. when i drink them i put them on the lower nightstand. works like a charm

1

u/korby013 6h ago

i’m gonna use this for the dog’s pills! also very helpful because both my husband and i will be able to see if the other person gave the dog the pill.

1

u/Zoloista 6h ago

There are pill bottle lids that have timers on them so you can see how recently you last opened the bottle. My ADHD husband raves that his helped him finally stop second guessing whether he took his meds or not. Doesn’t help with a blister pack, but hopefully it helps one of the many other commenters clearly in need in this thread!

1

u/SmallGreenArmadillo 6h ago

This is very handy, thank you for sharing!

1

u/BirdInFlight301 6h ago

That's such a great idea! I put all my meds into those weekly AM/PM dispensers, but my husband doesn't and he is constantly questioning himself as to whether he took his pill or not. This is really going to help.

1

u/Beggatron14 6h ago

Oh fuck, you reminded me to take mine, thanks dude

1

u/jerseygirl75 5h ago

This is actually a good, new idea. Thanks O.P.

1

u/ben121frank 5h ago

I do something similar but mine come in a bottle so I just make a little chart from grid paper and tape it to the bottle

1

u/ObviouslyRealPerson 5h ago

I just started setting alarms on my phone for it.

With the phone set to vibrate, I don't dismiss the alarm until I have taken the medicine

1

u/Vicki_54 5h ago

Great idea. Ty.

1

u/crazygal1808 5h ago

Had to take a 7 day course recently. The pills themselves came with days printed- Monday, Tuesday and AM and PM ..etc. Did not miss a single dose. Now I am always gonna do this!

1

u/opus-70 5h ago

Exactly what I do too, and it works really well.

1

u/GreyNoiseGaming 5h ago

I bought my gf a pill organizer. Told her to set it up on Sunday morning. She asks "What if I forget to set it up, or if I take the wrong day or time?"
"Set an alarm."
"What if I forget to set it."
"Do it right now."
"I'll do it later."
"Your current method is pouring everything onto the table at 9 pm and taking it all at once. So, I Guess you'll just die."

1

u/Unable-Awareness-698 5h ago

1

u/dianebk2003 5h ago

I like this idea.

I don’t like using pill organizers because I prefer they were in their original bottles. When I travel, I feel safer knowing I have evidence of my prescription. It’s probably not a good idea, but I feel more comfortable with it. Plus I used to break the organizers on a regular basis.

1

u/reddbooks 5h ago

Smart and easy thanks

1

u/Wolv90 5h ago

I love things like this. At some point you have to understand that sharpie works on anything and whatever you need to do to remember things is okay. For instance, we have a cabinet in our basement called "Todd". We couldn't figure out how to differentiate it from another one that looks similar, so I named it.

1

u/NoRequirement1967 5h ago

I give meds for a job, only date AFTER you've popped the dose, otherwise it can get messy with just 1 missed pill, and when you check you can visually see the last dosage time ( and who popped it in my field )

For pills in bottles, I got a pack of pillogic timer things that reset whenever you press down to open the child safe cap. I got the pet/livestock ones because they do the same thing as the human ones for a fraction of the price…

If the timer is above 24hours, I didn’t take that pill today XD

My life hack to remembering is to do something really silly while you take it. Pretend it's an eyeball and you pluck it out to eat it, slap yourself and pull your hair, hold your nose and spin around, etc. At the end of the week, you'll remember each silly thing you did.

I just went old school and I keep a tiny cheap note pad on my nightstand by my med bucket and scribble the time I take something. For “as needed” meds (anxiety, migraines) I leave the bottle on my nightstand if I CAN take it. If I already have, the bottle goes in the bucket. The things we have to do to keep on top of this stuff as we get older stinks!

I do this for my blood pressure tables. One per day so I put the ignition of the day on each tablet.

This is the most common sense thing I've ever seen and now I'm mad at myself for never thinking about it.

A great idea; I had the exact same idea for some pills I used to take; it saved me.

Bro just reinvented the pill cassette and reddit is acting like he's a visionary genius. If you ask your pharmacy they'll do this for free.

I set a reminder in my phone for 5 pm and my rule is I can't press "mark completed" until I've taken it.

I had a similar issue with pill bottles. These pill bottle timers you push to reset have made it so much easier to remember; https://www.amazon.com/Timer-Pill-Organizer-Medication-Tracker-Reminder-Dose-Attach-Prescription/dp/B0DRMD79TX/

Not hating, just surprised how many people have never heard of this.

I got out of the hospital a couple weeks ago and the pills they sent me home with for the next week were marked with the days of the week and a separate container for each. Like there's already product versions of this.

I did this for accutane! It helped immensely

I wanted to make a pill dispenser with a dial that has days when you turn it

I'm to poor

I put the days on my tablet blister pack. They already have the days on but obviously start on a Monday, my week starts on a Saturday.

If I leave them as is I can guarantee I will forget to take one, then wonder what day it is and when I last took a tablet.

Haven't forgotten a tablet since I started changing the days.

That’s a great idea, except all of my meds come in bottles. I’ve tried the pill organizer but it didn’t work for me. I’ve been taking the pills out of the bottle (the ones i take daily) and placing them in a specific place so i can see them. if i don’t see them, it means that I’ve already taken them. It may not be the most effective way, but so far it’s been working out for me okay.

Or number your pills by writing on them!

1

u/thisandthatk 3h ago

I always do this with medication that I need to take for only a limited amount of time. My anxiety spikes if I don’t track it properly. 🥲

u/miaSissy 3h ago

Two words if you have a Samsung phone. Samsung Health. Will easily help you remember to take medications. It can also help track blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, and exercising along with other things. Honestly, a well thought out app IMO.

u/Capt-Chopsticks 3h ago

Your phone does a better version of this. Even records the exact time you took the Medicine.
