I was racking my brain, trying to remember if I'd taken my morning anti-biotic, when an idea occurred to me

That’s so smart! Thanks for sharing

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago
My favorite lifehacks are the simplest ones.
Here's another pill-related one, from a while ago. It's come in super handy, especially when trying to rifle through the pill bottles at night when I've left my glasses in the room.

u/CouchGremlin14 5h ago
They also sell pill bottle lids with timers on them that reset whenever you open them. Wouldn’t work for these since it’s a blister pack, but it’s really nice for things you have to take every X hours. I also got tired of the “but did I actually take my pill??” game.

Just to pile on this - whenever my kids needed liquid antibiotics, I would put a piece of blue/green painters tape on the side with a grid that included the total number of days with doses, so that I would check off each dose given with a sharpie

u/Crime_Dawg 5h ago
I mean, they do make am / pm pill boxes.
2
u/Equivalent-Toe-6036 4h ago
Very true but sometimes that 1 extra step of getting an am/pm pill box is enough to stop the solution

u/VagabondVivant 6h ago
This might be old hat to some, but I'd never seen it anywhere so I figured I'd share it after it came to me this morning.
I suck at remembering what I did when, and didn't really wanna have to set up yet another alarm (especially a twice-daily one), so I just grabbed a sharpie and scribbled notes on the back of the blister pack so I'd always know if I'd taken my pill at the correct time.

u/braiding_water 6h ago
I’m supposed to take pills before I eat & I always forget. I’ve put notes around the kitchen in fridge. It make work for a couple of days but then I don’t “see” the reminders anymore.

I saw my cousin write the time and date along with her initials when applying our Papa's fentanyl patch when doing his Hospice.
It was a huge light bulb moment for me! I'm T1 diabetic and use an insulin pump. You have to apply a new insertion site every 3 days to avoid abcesses and infections, and it was something I struggled with, as it just never settled into my memory. Reminders were often ignored, because I'd be out and about, or busy, and lie to myself that I'll remember to do it "later."
I realized that I could write the date right on the insertion set, and just check it every day when it would be convenient to go replace it immediately if it had been 3 days!
My skin has had way less problems with infection, or malabsorption since I started doing it!
And I also write on blister packs!
The hardest activity to remember is one you do often, and have been doing a long time. Your memory blurs precise details because the memory runs together so it becomes unimportant!

u/mintchocolate1234 6h ago
Just a tip but daily reminders on my phone help a lot. And to not delete or mark it as ‘complete’ until after I have actually taken the pill.

u/fiftyseven 4h ago
i'd just forget to mark it off. and then be unable to remember if it's the marking or the pilltaking i forgot to do

Oh duh. Man that’s a good solution. I always write it on a notepad on the fridge and cross off each day. This is better.
Actual life hack. Thanks!

Birth control meds are marked with days of the week on their packaging. Helps me because I take all my pills at the same time every day so I can just check my BC pills and if that is gone, I know I took everything.
7
u/Red__M_M 5h ago
If you have a bottle, then you can flip it to signify that you have taken the pill.
In the morning everything is rising. Your bottle should be right side up. If it’s not then you haven’t taken the pill. Take it and correct the bottle.
In the evening everything is winding down. Your bottle should be upside down. If it isn’t then take a pill and flip the bottle.

u/Fire_Lake 5h ago
this is fun because in the evening if the bottle is right side up, you get to wonder if you forgot your pill or you forgot to flip it

FYI, a lot of pharmacies sell a plastic version of this.

u/ThickDoughnut4267 6h ago
True. Probably not worth buying that if you don't have a chronic illness, though. If you have to take several drugs at different times of the day however, I believe those things you mentioned can be a lifesaver
5
u/VagabondVivant 6h ago
Yeah, these antibiotics are just for the next couple of weeks as I recover from dental surgery.
Meanwhile I do have a standard pillbox for my regular daily pills, but none of them are twice-daily, so I'd still be likely to forget my evening med.

I like this! I do sorta the inverse of this. I like to write the dates on things that take a long time to use. Like big packs of toilet paper or paper towels. Or other things like a big container of coffee, oats, rice, and many other shelf stable but not permanent foods. I also like putting dates on my deodorant, garbage bags, cotton swabs, and other items that take awhile to use. It can be interesting to see how long some things last.

My birth control has 4 rows, seven column and you get 7 thin stickers of the weekdays all starting on different days to put over the columns. I think that design is genius, and also similar to this

u/Loud-Mans-Lover 3h ago
This rocks if you've got foil backed ones!
I usually flip my bottles - not taken is upright, taken is upside down.
For everything else I have a notepad that I write all at once in the morning, then just check it off as I go.
2
u/lemonhead2345 3h ago
I do this on pill bottles. Draw a line with hash marks to mark off AM/PM then mark an X after taking the dose. Helps so much.
2
u/Motor-Illustrator226 3h ago
Absolutely great hack! In fact, some meds like birth control pills are designed like this -- the back of each pack has Monday through Sunday labeled, in 4 rows of 7. As long as you know what day it is, you always know if you've taken that day's pill.

I use an AM/PM pill box and have two "Take Pills" alarms on my phone: 9 AM and 9 PM.

u/tragiccosmicaccident 1h ago
Used to live in Taiwan, they gave you all your pills in little labeled wax paper bags, individual doses by time, it was great

u/warfrogs 16m ago
This is similar to how blister pack meds are tracked in group homes and care facilities allll over. Generally, instead of labeling before dispensing, you label as you dispense to document and track who administered the medications and exactly when.

The iPhone Health app also lets you set up med times and reminders. Has the advantage that you can display it on a Medical Alert screen for medics, and share it with family.

Get a pill bottle with a timer on the cap that shows you how long it’s been since it was last opened

I am really bad with any meds, especially antibiotics. I use an app called "Take your pills".

u/Avtomati1k 6h ago
every night i put mine on the upper nightstand. when i drink them i put them on the lower nightstand. works like a charm

u/korby013 6h ago
i’m gonna use this for the dog’s pills! also very helpful because both my husband and i will be able to see if the other person gave the dog the pill.
1
u/Zoloista 6h ago
There are pill bottle lids that have timers on them so you can see how recently you last opened the bottle. My ADHD husband raves that his helped him finally stop second guessing whether he took his meds or not. Doesn’t help with a blister pack, but hopefully it helps one of the many other commenters clearly in need in this thread!

u/BirdInFlight301 6h ago
That's such a great idea! I put all my meds into those weekly AM/PM dispensers, but my husband doesn't and he is constantly questioning himself as to whether he took his pill or not. This is really going to help.

Had to take a 7 day course recently. The pills themselves came with days printed- Monday, Tuesday and AM and PM ..etc. Did not miss a single dose. Now I am always gonna do this!

u/GreyNoiseGaming 5h ago
I bought my gf a pill organizer. Told her to set it up on Sunday morning. She asks "What if I forget to set it up, or if I take the wrong day or time?"
"Set an alarm."
"What if I forget to set it."
"Do it right now."
"I'll do it later."
"Your current method is pouring everything onto the table at 9 pm and taking it all at once. So, I Guess you'll just die."

I like this idea.
I don’t like using pill organizers because I prefer they were in their original bottles. When I travel, I feel safer knowing I have evidence of my prescription. It’s probably not a good idea, but I feel more comfortable with it. Plus I used to break the organizers on a regular basis.

I love things like this. At some point you have to understand that sharpie works on anything and whatever you need to do to remember things is okay. For instance, we have a cabinet in our basement called "Todd". We couldn't figure out how to differentiate it from another one that looks similar, so I named it.
1
u/NoRequirement1967 5h ago
I give meds for a job, only date AFTER you've popped the dose, otherwise it can get messy with just 1 missed pill, and when you check you can visually see the last dosage time ( and who popped it in my field )

For pills in bottles, I got a pack of pillogic timer things that reset whenever you press down to open the child safe cap. I got the pet/livestock ones because they do the same thing as the human ones for a fraction of the price…
If the timer is above 24hours, I didn’t take that pill today XD

My life hack to remembering is to do something really silly while you take it. Pretend it's an eyeball and you pluck it out to eat it, slap yourself and pull your hair, hold your nose and spin around, etc. At the end of the week, you'll remember each silly thing you did.

1
u/LizzieKay289 4h ago
I just went old school and I keep a tiny cheap note pad on my nightstand by my med bucket and scribble the time I take something. For “as needed” meds (anxiety, migraines) I leave the bottle on my nightstand if I CAN take it. If I already have, the bottle goes in the bucket. The things we have to do to keep on top of this stuff as we get older stinks!

i've done this for years with my medication! 😊 i only have to take it once a day so i mark them with letters for the day of the week. i'm super forgetfull so it helps a lot. 😄 i get pretty bad withdrawal symptoms if i forget it so it's a good system to make sure i've taken it!

I always do this with my birth control packets! I'll write the digit of the date at the top of a new packet so if I can't remember if I've taken it, I can at the very least count my way to the current date.

Not hating, just surprised how many people have never heard of this.
I got out of the hospital a couple weeks ago and the pills they sent me home with for the next week were marked with the days of the week and a separate container for each. Like there's already product versions of this.

I wanted to make a pill dispenser with a dial that has days when you turn it
I'm to poor
1
u/Big_Space_9836 3h ago
I put the days on my tablet blister pack. They already have the days on but obviously start on a Monday, my week starts on a Saturday.
If I leave them as is I can guarantee I will forget to take one, then wonder what day it is and when I last took a tablet.
Haven't forgotten a tablet since I started changing the days.
1
u/Upstairs_Bus_3743 3h ago
That’s a great idea, except all of my meds come in bottles. I’ve tried the pill organizer but it didn’t work for me. I’ve been taking the pills out of the bottle (the ones i take daily) and placing them in a specific place so i can see them. if i don’t see them, it means that I’ve already taken them. It may not be the most effective way, but so far it’s been working out for me okay.
